Lest We Forget
Introduction
We are gathered here to remember with thanks the men of this village and parish who unselfishly gave their lives in two world wars.
In their memory, we will rededicate this Memorial and give thanks that their ultimate sacrifice gave us our freedom.
But first let us offer our prayers to almighty God.
Prayers for the peace of the world that those whom we commemorate may not have died in vain.
Prayers for grace to follow the example of all who have died in the service of God and their country.
Let us gather up our thanks and dedication in the prayer which Jesus taught us:
The Lord’s Prayer
Hymn: O God, our help in ages past
O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.
Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defence is sure.
Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.
A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.
Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.
O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while life shall last,
And our eternal home.
Prayer of Rededication
The Exhortation
“They shall grow not old,
As we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning,
We will remember them.”
All Affirm:
“We will remember them.”

Psalm 121
I to the hills will lift mine eyes,
From whence doth come mine aid.
My safety cometh from the Lord
Who heaven and earth hath made
Thy foot he’ll not let slide, nor will
He slumber that thee keeps.
Behold he that keeps Israel
He slumbers not nor sleeps.
The Lord thee keeps, the Lord thy shade,
On thy right hand doth stay:
The moon by night thee shall not smite
Nor yet the sun by day.
The Lord shall keep thy soul: he shall
Preserve thee from all ill.
Henceforth thy going out and in
God keep for ever will.

In Flanders Fields by Lt. Col. John McCrae
Canadian Army
In Flanders fields, the poppies grow
between the crosses, row on row,
that mark our places; and in the sky
the larks, still bravely singing, fly
scarce heard amongst the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
loved and were loved, and now we lie
in Flanders fields.
Take up your quarrel with the foe;
to you from failing hands we throw
the torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
we shall not sleep, though poppies grow
in Flanders fields.
The Kohima Epitaph
“When you go home
tell them of us and say,
for your tomorrow
we gave our today”.
